The library is collaborating with the Salisbury Post newspaper on a large-scale digitization project to preserve the Salisbury Post morgue. The morgue is the newspaper's physical archive of documents, photographs and newspaper clippings utilized by reporters as reference material. Materials go back as far as the 1930s.
The proposed Records Loan Agreement between Rowan County and Salisbury Newsmedia, LLC will allow for the library to archive morgue documents, photographs, and newspaper articles of historic value for purposes of digitizing, scanning and otherwise preserving copies thereof for the library's Edith M. Clark History Room and future use by the public. Additionally, this agreement will better enable the library to qualify and apply for grants to offset costs of this significant digitization project.
County Attorney Jay Dees worked with Salisbury Post legal staff on this final version (attached). On December 23, 2021, the President and Publisher of Salisbury Newsmedia, LLC signed the final version.
This agreement is not obligating the County to cover any expenses. The County would only incur cost if it chooses to outsource digitization of documents. At that time the County would appropriate funds, most likely from a grant.
- The Library Services Director, Purchasing Director and County Attorney ask the Board of Commissioners to authorize the County Manager to sign the Records Loan Agreement with Salisbury Newsmedia, LLC.
