On March 30, 2020, the Rowan County Board of Commissioners adopted a temporary policy for Emergency Paid Sick Leave, provided for under The Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA or Act), that will expire on December 31, 2020. The purpose of this Federal benefit and resulting temporary policy was to encourage employees who are sick with (or exposed to) the COVID-19 virus to remain home in order to care for themselves, their dependents, and/or avoid possible COVID-19 exposure to co-workers and citizens.
To date, there has been no indication that the Federal Government plans to extend this Emergency Paid Sick Leave benefit to employees beyond December 31, 2020. However, the number of employees being exposed to, or infected by, the COVID-19 virus is only increasing. As a result, please accept this proposed revision to Policy 6.3 Sick Time, which would allow employees who have been exposed to or infected by the COVID-19 virus and are otherwise out of all available leave balances to be advanced up to eighty (80) hours of sick leave for specific COVID-related absences. This change will allow for employees to take financial care of themselves and others while overcoming this pandemic.
Please approve these proposed revisions to Policy 6.3 Sick Time. Thank you for consideration of this request.
