Our department has been awarded a US Department of Transportation Hazardous
Materials Emergency Preparedness (HMEP) Planning Grant funds. The HMEP funds are awarded to jurisdictions for enhancing preparedness for transportation incidents involving hazardous materials. Examples of these include:
• Joint/regional activities that address identified gaps in capabilities and include
responders from multiple jurisdictions and disciplines
• Exercises of chemical emergency response plans that actively engage Risk
Management Plan (RMP) facilities
• Development of emergency response plans with a clearly identifiable hazardous
materials focus or the development or update of the hazardous materials annex to
the County Plan
• LEPC outreach and training events involving local responders and industry
In two previous grant cycles, Rowan County was awarded funding to conduct enhanced response planning for 21 of our local hazardous chemical facilities. We will use these funds to continue our enhanced response planning for our local facilities.
Staff recommends approval of the award of non-matching grant funds.
